The Archives

This diptych, consisting of two 12×12 inch art quilts, explores the fundamental contrast between human environments and the natural world. Titled Cityscape and Landscape, the pieces utilize a cohesive palette and material approach while embodying drastically different subject matter.
The Cityscape employs vertical lines and angular, abstract shapes to convey the towering structures of the metropolis. Constructed from reclaimed scraps and vintage fabrics, the varied textures and colors mimic the complexity and layers of urban life. Quilting lines are used to suggest windows, traffic, and the busy movement of the city.
The Landscape offers a counterpoint of sweeping, organic forms. Deep blues and greens dominate, depicting layered mountains, skies, and stylized flora. The techniques include raw-edge appliqué and mixed media, allowing the fabric’s pattern and movement to define the terrain. The contrast between the rigid geometry of the city and the free-flowing curves of the nature piece creates a compelling dialogue about where we choose to live and what we value.
Both pieces feature a dark, unified binding, tying them together as a single conceptual unit. Techniques used include traditional quilting, mixed media elements, raw-edge appliqué, and found/reclaimed textiles.
Each piece is 12×12″, and are currently part of an exhibit hosted by Fiber Arts Center of Arizona. Pieces are available for purchase for $150 each ($300 for the pair), by contacting the Fiber Arts Center via their website.
