There is nothing about this piece that isn’t reclaimed from something else – as a matter of fact this piece started life (and lived most of it) as a pillow cover experiment that I never could make myself like. So I decided that I would deconstruct the piece and turn it into something else.
I have recently started experimenting with assymetrical and free form borders and edges with my art quilts, and this piece seemed to lend itself perfectly to that idea.
There is something so satisfying about taking disparate materials and forcing them to have a conversation. “Hiding in Plain Sight” is my newest fiber piece, built from a stash of reclaimed and vintage goods. I loved playing with the juxtaposition here—the structure of the grid against the organic flow of the raw edges and that hypnotic swirl. It’s all about looking closer.
Each of the parts that comprise the whole have special representation all on their own — a favorite pair of board shorts deconstructed and reclaimed; leftover scraps from a Hawaiian Pineapple Wedding quilt built as an anniversary gift for my dearest friend; a remnant from a pair of jeans worn by my love… and of course my fascination with sewing bodies and parts of bodies – especially the faces. Weird, eh?
