Cityscape & Landscape Pair

Urban geometry meets natural geometry.

A striking duality! Introducing Cityscape and Landscape, a companion pair of 12×12″ art quilts. These pieces explore the contrasting beauty of the built world versus the wild world, stitched together using reclaimed fabrics, vintage textiles, and a mix of quilting and raw-edge appliqué. They are designed to be displayed as a pair to celebrate both the energy of the city and the tranquility of the mountains.

This diptych, consisting of two 12×12 inch art quilts, explores the fundamental contrast between human environments and the natural world. Titled Cityscape and Landscape, the pieces utilize a cohesive palette and material approach while embodying drastically different subject matter.

The Cityscape employs vertical lines and angular, abstract shapes to convey the towering structures of the metropolis. Constructed from reclaimed scraps and vintage fabrics, the varied textures and colors mimic the complexity and layers of urban life. Quilting lines are used to suggest windows, traffic, and the busy movement of the city.

The Landscape offers a counterpoint of sweeping, organic forms. Deep blues and greens dominate, depicting layered mountains, skies, and stylized flora. The techniques include raw-edge appliqué and mixed media, allowing the fabric’s pattern and movement to define the terrain. The contrast between the rigid geometry of the city and the free-flowing curves of the nature piece creates a compelling dialogue about where we choose to live and what we value.

Both pieces feature a dark, unified binding, tying them together as a single conceptual unit. Techniques used include traditional quilting, mixed media elements, raw-edge appliqué, and found/reclaimed textiles.

I’m a founding member of the Fiber Arts Center AZ, and I’m happy to tell you more about the group, what our goals and aims are, who we may be of interest to, and a little bit about the potential future plans for the group.

The Fiber Arts Center AZ: A Dedicated Hub for Textiles

The Fiber Arts Center AZ is a non-profit fine arts organization based in Chandler, Arizona. Its primary purpose is to fill a perceived gap in the Phoenix metropolitan area—the fifth-largest city in the U.S.—which, unlike many other major cities, lacked a dedicated physical space solely for the fiber arts. The Center serves as a vital resource for the statewide community through a focus on three core pillars: education, exhibitions, and the honoring of cultural heritages.

Mission and Community Role

The Center is designed to be a “home” for fiber artists, providing a professional environment to showcase work that is often relegated to hobbyist spaces. By positioning itself as a fine arts organization, it aims to elevate the status of fiber arts—including weaving, quilting, felting, and needlework—from functional craft to recognized contemporary art.

Operations and Impact

  • Education: The organization facilitates workshops and learning opportunities to ensure that traditional and modern fiber techniques are passed down through generations.

  • Statewide Reach: Although its physical roots are in Chandler, it identifies as a statewide entity, often acting as a bridge between various regional guilds, such as the Arizona Federation of Weavers and Spinners Guilds.

  • Exhibitions: The Center hosts curated shows that highlight the diversity of the medium, providing local artists with a platform to reach a broader audience and sell their work.

In short, the Fiber Arts Center AZ exists to provide the infrastructure, visibility, and community support necessary to keep the fiber arts thriving in the Arizona region.
